"Top" is the pronunciation of the Chinese word for "breakthrough," but of course it's also the English word for the highest point, the apex, the pinnacle of something. Like being at the top of one's game, the top of the market, you know, the kind of position you'll be in after you break through.

Good news for breakthroughs and those already on top, then, because .top domains are on sale until the end of this year for creations and renewals. Though they normally cost $27.37 for one year at A rates, you can register one for just $1.99 (also at A rates). Renewals, normally $27.37 will be available for $9.00 per year.

It's all about that little bit extra with the domains entering the GoLive phase this Wednesday July 8: .gold, .golf, .plus, and .tours.

First, nothing adds that extra touch like .gold. Plain old shoelaces need a little pep? Throw in some gold chains instead. Need a new paint job on your car? Why not gold chrome? Fiat currency got you down? Invest in some gold bullion OR better yet, make that gold teeth. Now you can improve your domain name portfolio with a little bit of .gold (and a pager).

Another little extra in life is .golf. Like the extra effort to meticulously calculate the effect the strength and direction of the wind will have on your shot, the extra responsibility of following the rules without an umpire or referee calling you out if you don't, and of course the thirteen extra clubs for any circumstance.

In a more explicit interpretation on the theme, .plus is the gTLD that literally adds more. And need we say more?

And for when the extra touch of actually having a guide when visiting a museum, a monument, a city, or other tourist attraction, there's .tours, which itself is a little bit extra of a gTLD, as we feel obliged to mention that it can also stand for the French city of Tours. Tours of tours anyone?

After the recent release of .tirol, another new gTLD has entered the Sunrise phase to remind us in the middle of summer to be ready for winter: .ski.

But with its release in the Sunrise phase so close to July 4th, we're more inclined to think of how great this extension would be for honoring Polish-American Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski than snowy mountains (though we would be remiss not to mention waterskiing). And of course, Pulaski isn't the only Polish name ending in .ski, so the field is open for all the Kowalskis, Kaminskis, Wisniewskis, Jankowskis of the world.

Bonus points for any -skis with a ski shop, or chalet.

The .ski extension will be in the Sunrise phase from July 1 until August 30 and a two-year registration at A rates will cost $172.99.

At the same time, an LRP (Limited Registration Period) Landrush reserved for winter sports professionals affiliated with organizations registered with the .ski registry (see here). The price for a two-year registration in this LRP Landrush phase will be $114.19 at A rates.

Finally, .ski enters the GoLive phase on September 8, at which point it will be available for a one-year registration for $48.31 at A rates.

Three gTLDs are entering the GoLive phase today and all of the have to do with commitment.

First off, going on a .date involves a lot of commitment: time, maybe some money, blocking off part of your schedule … and if your date can't commit to all of those things that's a great signal that person, well, probably has other problems but call it "commitment."

Next, .faith is often a lifelong commitment, whether faith in an actual organized religion, an abstract system of governance or economics, or just faith in a personal friend, relative, or spouse.

And then there's what we consider the one true sign of commitment: .review. Nothing shows love and devotion like a good old fashioned review. Whether it's a rave review of a film, album, or book, a performance review at work, or an academic review. And every good relationship should occasionally be subject to review. We aren't marital experts, but we tentatively suggest, if you are truly committed to a loved one, putting that person through a lengthy review process. That's the only true way to verify their claims of devotion.

It really feels like more than a coincidence that the official opening of our Gandi Asia offices in Taipei corresponds with the release of the new gTLD .taipei. Maybe the gTLD spirits are smiling on us. We're not superstitious, but we think it means things will go well for us in Taipei.

And if things are already going well for you in Taipei, .taipei is currently in Sunrise, though it's not the traditional Sunrise we're used to seeing for most gTLDs.

Here's how it will go:

June 16 through July 6: Individuals and registered companies located in the city of Taipei (or New Taipei) who own a trademark registered with the government of Taiwan can register that trademark for a .taipei.

July 7 through July 17: The same qualifications as above, but your trademark doesn't necessarily have to be registered specifically with the government of Taiwan, but any trademark protection institution.

As a result of the peculiar way this Sunrise phase is rolling out, if you're interested in taking advantage of this phase, you'll need to contact our Customer Care team so we can check with the registry. As long as everything checks out, you would be invoiced for $69.00 (or 2100TWD).

We had to wrack our brains to think of where we'd heard that one before but then we remembered! That's how we described ourselves on our online dating profile.

Anyway, here's the list of the extensions that qualify as Fun & Generic, many of which we may consider for the next revision of the dating profile.
